Medical Data Science Master’s programme accredited: starting in 2027–2028
The new Medical Data Science (MDS) Master’s programme has officially received accreditation. This means that the programme will actually commence in the 2027–2028 academic year.
This milestone marks the successful development of an ambitious initiative that began in 2022. MDS has now grown into a forward-looking Master’s programme with distinctive learning objectives and a strongly interdisciplinary character.
A bridge between AI, data science and healthcare
The Master’s in Medical Data Science is a new, two-year, English-taught Master’s programme offered by Radboudumc and the Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Computer Science at Radboud University. The programme brings together data science, artificial intelligence and biomedical knowledge, training students to become medical data scientists who can contribute to better healthcare and health.
Students develop technical and analytical skills and learn to apply them in medical practice and biomedical research. The programme emphasises collaboration with clinicians, researchers and other professionals, as well as addressing ethical, social and legal issues surrounding the use of AI and data science.
The programme focuses specifically on applications in medical imaging, omics data and data from medical interventions. Thanks to the collaboration between Radboudumc and Radboud University, the MDS programme offers students an authentic and interdisciplinary learning environment.
Who is the programme intended for?
The programme is aimed at students with a relevant undergraduate degree, such as Computing Science, Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Technology, Bioinformatics or Mathematics. Students with a background in, for example, Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Molecular Sciences, Biology, Biopharmaceutical Sciences or Technical Medicine may also be admitted, provided they have sufficient prior knowledge in the fields of programming and data science.
The Master’s programme has a limited intake. In the first year, there is room for a maximum of 30 students; thereafter, the intake will be expanded to 48 students.
Contribution from IQ Health
Within IQ Health, the research groups on Implementation, Ethics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics make a significant contribution to the Master’s programme, both in terms of teaching and programme coordination. This brings together expertise in the fields of data, health, implementation and the responsible use of technology within the curriculum.
