Calendar PhD defense Neeltje de Vries

13 May 2026

On Wednesday 13 May at 4.30 p.m., Neetje de Vries will defend her thesis in the auditorium of Radboud University in Nijmegen.

Her thesis is entitled “𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘙𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨 -𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 – 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘯𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘥 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘴”.

In times of severe staff shortages in healthcare, this thesis focuses on one urgent question: 𝗛𝗼𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘇𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘇𝗶𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗵𝘂𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻?

The research focuses on the factors that contribute to nurses and doctors deciding to leave or stay. Given the contextual challenges faced by both professional groups, the focus of this thesis narrows halfway through to specifically the nursing profession. The results offer starting points for targeted strategies to improve long-term staff retention in hospitals.

The supervisors are Prof. H. Vermeulen, Prof. J.P. de Winter and co-supervisor Dr C.J. van Oostveen.
