News NWO grant for appropriate care in heart failure

17 December 2024

In the Netherlands, 240,000 people struggle with heart failure, leading to 40,000 hospitalizations and 800 million euros in costs each year. These patients often have a poor overall condition, moderate recovery after hospitalization, and a high risk of readmission.

A consortium of researchers and companies, led by Prof. Dick Thijssen of the Radboudumc, was recently established to make care more appropriate for people with heart failure. To this end, the consortium has received a 5.3 million euro grant from NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research).
As part of this, Prof. Dr. Tijn Kool, Dr. Femke Atsma (IQ Health) and Dr. Karin Dijkstra of Saxion University of Applied Sciences will, in the CardiacCare@Home project, look at how they can better support patients at home through, among other things, appropriate lifestyle care and smart monitoring based on AI.
