On Wednesday, September 3, Tijn Kool, professor of Appropriate Care at Radboudumc, spoke with Armand Girbes, professor of Intensive Care at Amsterdam UMC, in front of a packed audience at De Balie in Amsterdam. Moderated by Yoeri Albrecht, director of De Balie, the debate focused on the future of our healthcare system.
The conclusion was that things need to change. The professors agreed that there must be more value for the patient, more room for the healthcare provider, less bureaucracy, and fewer financial incentives. During the debate, several concrete possible changes were proposed.
An important precondition is that there must be a broad social discussion. Citizens of the Netherlands must be involved in the discussion on how we can keep healthcare sustainable, affordable, and durable, and political parties must put this topic much higher on their agenda.
