News Large differences in action in compression care in district nursing

12 February 2025

In 2021, the V&VN (Verpleegkundigen en Verzorgenden Nederland) conducted a bottleneck analysis. That analysis showed that in district nursing there appears to be a lot of difference in actions by healthcare providers when it comes to compression care. It was decided to develop a guideline on compression care in district nursing, and to draw up an overview with practical advice, together with stakeholders in the field. Important in this was that nurses, nursing specialists, and carers from district nursing would recognise themselves in it. In February 2023, Rosa Mennes MSc and Dr Maud Heinen of IQ Health started developing the guideline on lower extremity compression therapy for district nursing.

The guideline covers the topics on which information is needed during the clinical reasoning process.

The aim is to provide good care in compression therapy, advice on how to deal with the ankle-arm index in practice, how to provide training in compression therapy most effectively and how to effectively increase self-reliance in clients with compression therapy. For the first two topics, Mennes and Heinen have developed guideline modules. For the guideline modules on education and self-efficacy, they conducted systematic literature studies in scientific databases. After many responses in the comment round and a successful authorisation round, the guideline was authorised by 11 parties, and adopted and published on 28 January 2025.
