News SAFEST Develops Checklist for Improved Patient Information

21 September 2026

As part of the SAFEST project, NIVEL, in collaboration with patients and project partners, developed a checklist to help hospitals improve the information they provide to patients. Our colleague Hilly Calsbeek led this project. Its content is based on what patients want to know about surgery. The checklist is intended for adult patients undergoing elective surgery and for family members, partners, and informal caregivers who support the patient.

The SAFEST project focuses on improving patient safety during the perioperative process. As part of this project, a set of multidisciplinary and evidence-based recommendations was developed based on international guidelines and the scientific literature. The project ran from June 2022 to July 2026 and aimed to improve adherence to these evidence-based recommendations and reduce the number of surgical complications in ten participating hospitals. Radboudumc (IQ Health department) was one of the partners and participating hospitals.

The SAFEST project (“Improving quality and patient SAFEty in surgical care through STandardisation and harmonisation of perioperative care in Europe”) was funded by Horizon Europe (grant no. 101057825)

The checklist is available here, including in Dutch: Safest | Welcome
