Introduction
Are you a PhD student or postdoc and interested in learning more about (de-)implementation and (de-)implementation research? Then sign up now to participate in our postgraduate course "(De-)implementation research".
This course meets the explicit demand of researchers to go through all facets of (de-)implementation research in a short course. The purpose of the course is to teach researchers (PhD students and postdocs) how to set up and conduct (de-)implementation research.
The course is open to researchers from the Netherlands and Belgium. The language of instruction in the course is Dutch. The third edition of the course will take place in Nijmegen in March 2025.

For whom?
This course is primarily intended for PhD students and postdocs who are (or will be) conducting (de-)implementation research. These PhD students and postdocs are engaged or interested in (de-)implementation research and related methodology. They are working in various (medical) disciplines.
Program and topics
The course consists of four days and covers the following topics:
- Indicators for measuring the current state of care
- Determinants of (de-)implementation
- (De-)implementation plan
- Impact evaluation
- Process evaluation
- Economic evaluation
- Publication of implementation research
- Prepare implementation project proposal using Grol and Wensing's "implementation of change model"
Learning objectives
Implementation of desired care -and/or de-implementation of undesired care- is essential to the quality and safety of health care. However, successful (de)implementation does not happen by itself. This course teaches a systematic, step-by-step approach to (de)implementation in scientific research.
Upon completion of this course, participants will have knowledge of:
- Establishing indicators to measure the current state of care
- Examining determinants of (de-)implementation
- Developing a (de-)implementation plan based on the contextual analysis
- Preparing and conducting an impact evaluation of the (de-)implementation plan
- Preparing and conducting a process evaluation of the (de-)implementation plan
- Preparing and conducting an economic evaluation of the (de-)implementation plan
- Indicating in which relevant journals they can publish implementation research
- Preparing and executing an implementation project proposal using the "implementation of change model" of Grol and Wensing
End result
- Certificate
- Study load will be 1.5 EC
Literature
The literature of this course consists of the book Implementation. Effective Improvement of Patient Care (Michel Wensing, Richard Grol) which you will receive when attending this course, supplemented by several scientific articles and the slide presentations of this course. In addition, we recommend the book: How to reduce overuse in healthcare. A practical guide by Kool et al.
Course coordinators / teachers
Prof. dr. Theo van Achterberg, KU Leuven, Leuven
- Theo van Achterberg is professor of Quality of Care in the Department of Social and Primary Care at the Academic Center for Nursing and Midwifery. Both his teaching and his research focus on quality issues in patient care, with the implementation of evidence-informed practice being central.
Theo: "Just like healthcare innovations and guidelines, the implementation of these innovations and guidelines needs to be evidence-informed!".
Prof. dr. Marlies Hulscher, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen
- Marlies Hulscher is Professor of Quality of Care for Infectious Diseases. Through research and teaching, she is committed to improving the quality of care for patients with infectious diseases in hospitals and in public health care.
Prof. dr. Rosella Hermens, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen
- Rosella Hermens is professor of Person-centered oncological chain and network care at Radboudumc/the Radboud University. She investigates how care for patients with cancer can be more person-centered and better organized, with the patient retaining control.
Prof. dr. Tijn Kool, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen
- Tijn Kool is professor of Appropriate Care at Radboud University/Radboudumc. He conducts research on how to implement appropriate care and de-implement non-appropriate care. For 10 years he was program leader of Doen of laten?, a national program to support health care providers and patients in de-implementing non-appropriate care. He is a member of the working organization of the Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use program on behalf of the NFU .
Tijn Kool: "People find it difficult to stop doing something they are used to doing. That's why de-implementation is such a big challenge."
Dr. Julie Swillens, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen
- Julie Swillens is a postdoctoral researcher in the IQ Health department at Radboudumc. She specializes in implementation research and qualitative research. She works within various medical disciplines with a focus on oncology and infectious diseases.
